1. Identity & Presence

Founded in 1794 by Lorenz Fessler, the Fessler company is a historic Viennese institution with a legacy of masterful craftsmanship. After several early relocations, the company established its current headquarters at Mozartgasse 3, 1040 Wien in 1863. Fessler’s work is built upon three main pillars: ceramics production, the Hafner (stove setter) trade, and trade in high-quality goods. 2. The Origin Story & Key Figures

The Fessler story began in Alt Lerchenfeld, and the company quickly gained local popularity after moving to Favoritenstraße 10, near the Naschmarkt. The vendors at the Naschmarkt required ceramic vessels for their goods, which were produced by Fessler, establishing a strong local customer base. Lorenz's son, Mathias, expanded the business by creating "Stilkachelöfen" (tiled stoves) for imperial palaces like Schönbrunn and the Hofburg. Under his son, Eduard, the company experienced a boom during the "Ringstraßenzeit," employing 120 people. The company's tremendous success was halted by World War I, also because of the sudden cessation of imperial orders. The company's resilience allowed it to survive this crisis. The Fessler legacy was later passed down through generations, with Herbert Fritzsche becoming a master of both stove-setting and pottery, before his son, Ing. Clemens Fritzsche, took over in 1988.

3. The Core of the Craft

Fessler's philosophy is rooted in traditional Hafner craftsmanship. As a tile and ceramics manufactory since 1794, the company still produces the ceramic elements for its tiled stoves by hand in the center of Vienna. The entire production process - from clay preparation and tile forming to the firing in four electric kilns - takes place exclusively in-house in central Vienna.

This deep commitment to handcraft allows Fessler to restore historical stoves and is what makes them one of the very rare Austrian companies that can still manufacture the traditional 'Überschlagsöfen' (a specific type of baroque stove). The company has also expanded its portfolio to include trade in marble and stone masks, a segment developed by Ing. Clemens Fritzsche.

4. Enduring Legacy & Resilience

For over two centuries, the Fessler company has demonstrated remarkable resilience, adapting to changing times and market demands. It survived the tumultuous years of both World Wars and the economic challenges of the 20th century, preserving its craft and passing its knowledge from generation to generation. Crucially, the company has ensured the continuity of its highly specialized Hafner craft by strategically diversifying its offerings to include a broad trading portfolio of complementary products, such as fireplace surrounds, terrace ovens, and accessories. Furthermore, Fessler actively collaborates with artists, designers, and architects to ensure their products blend historic craftsmanship with contemporary designs. The company’s long-term success is a testament to its commitment to preserving its craft, which the current management views as an important contribution to cultural preservation. This continuous modernization and expansion of expertise, from historical restoration to new market strategies, ensures that the company still thrives today.
